What is Consciousness?

CONSCIOUSNESS

When you watch your favourite TV show or your favourite movie, sometimes you may forget about what snack you eat and sometimes even forget that you were eating something.  Most of us had heard someone telling 'Be Conscious'.  But what is Consciousness?  Why we need to be Conscious?  If you had checked in dictionaries, you would have known consciousness is the state of being aware of and responsible to our surroundings.  But how it works and why should we be aware of our surroundings?

Consciousness had been evolving in living organisms from tiny single celled organisms to humans and other different forms of life.  Some micro organisms doesn't have consciousness, they just wander over their environment and eat the food they need.  These tiny single celled creatures did not move in a defined direction for a particular reason.  They don't have an idea about their surroundings and their position in the environment.  But some micro organisms show the sign of some consciousness, these creature wander their environment very fast and slow down when they find food to consume it.  This is the early sign of consciousness in living beings.  Some micro organisms can even sense the smell of food and move towards it.  Smell is the first step towards consciousness.

Now organisms which can find the direction of food have some perspective about their environment.  But still it is difficult to make a picture about the surroundings.  Only by smell a living creature cannot avoid obstacles that might stop them from finding food.  They needed a clear map about their surroundings.  This time, one of the most important feature that still helps even humans to see their surrounding had evolved: the Eye.  It had evolved in different species convergently, the massive diversity in the structure of eye in different organisms tells how vital our eye sight is for being conscious.  First it had formed as a small pit in the exterior of a simple multi-cellular organism with some light sensing cells.  Later it evolved into a deep hole with a small opening to better focus the light, nerve cell had developed to send the signals of the image to the brain.  A protective membrane formed on the opening to control the amount of light entering it and a crystalline lens had formed to create a image on the retina.  Eye gave a clear view of the environment to the living organism and helped to better understanding about its surroundings. Ears are evolved to help to sense the vibrations and movements in the environment.

The next step in Consciousness is imagining something that will happen in the future if we did something in the present.  Sometimes some animals skip food if they find that they can get more food in the future if they skipped.  Many times even humans can't do it.  It is very difficult to us to not watch a cricket match in T.V. though if we do we can get a chance of watching next match in stadium.

But still it is unclear what is consciousness really is.  The only thing we can tell sure about it is when we say we are conscious, we create a picture about our surrounding inside our brain by using our ability to sense the reality.

Consciousness is very unreal that what we see is what we think as real.
